Q & A time with our concertmaster, Adrian Biemmi!

Q. Can you share overall experience from the previous summer camps?

A. It has been incredibly rewarding, and deliciously creatively fulfilling!

Q. What aspects of camp did you find most valuable or enjoyable?

A. I found the selection of repertoire to be so incredibly enjoyable. To perform with an ensemble of this calibre has allowed us as a tight knit group to really explore and discover some wonderful pieces for string orchestra. It’s been amazing to have worked on some of my own personal favorites, and to really feel like everyone is contributing and serving the music. It also goes without saying that it’s also fabulous to get to work so closely with Akiko, whose passion is incredibly infectious.

Q. Did you feel that the camp contributed to your musical growth and skill development? If so, were there specific areas of improvement that you noticed in your playing?

A. Absolutely! For me, having had the chance in the last couple of years to direct rehearsals of an ensemble larger than a string quartet has really pushed me outside of my comfort zone. To work with a larger group and find out sound together is something that’s always special.

Q. How would you describe the quality of instruction and coaching you received?

A. It’s been fantastic to work so closely with Akiko. One of the first things I noticed in one of our earliest informal rehearsals a couple of years ago was how incredibly perceptive she was, and that translated into such an intelligent, detailed rehearsal practice. There’s the perfect amount of instruction, encouragement, trust and challenge.

Q. Can you recall any particularly memorable or special moments from previous years?

A. My favorite memory was a very pregnant pause in the Strauss’ Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings from our 2022 concert, as the subsequent tutti entry was the most arresting wall of sound. Hearing that sound in the Perth Concert Hall was just surreal.

Don’t miss out the chance to witness the final outcome of our Summer Camp 2024 and watch out Adrian taking the lead of Cygnus Arioso String Orchestra!
